An honoured visitor is coming. I hold out the palm of my hand,. Then as I prostrate myself on the floor. When the visitor has receded beyond the iron bars,. This special cell in a military prison is a photographer's darkroom.
Without sunlight I sometimes laughed like an idiot. One day it was a coffin. One day it was altogether the sea. A few have survived here.

Being alive is itself being at sea without a single sail in sight. The Whisper. Rain falls. I sit at my desk.
The desk speaks softly:. Once I was a flower, was a leaf, was a stalk. I was a long root beneath the ground. A scrap of iron on the desk speaks:. I was the uvula of a stillness howling alone on moonlit nights. The rain stops. I go outside. Grass, thoroughly soaked, speaks to me:. Once I was your joy and sorrow.

Rating details. Sort order. Full of delicate silence punctuated with introspection Poems in translation always reveal as much about the translator as the poet and original poem. This is especially true in this collection which is a selection of poems from several of the poet's books. The sections return again and again to the themes of poetry, life, death, freedom, peace.
A quietly moving selection. Sep 06, Edgar Rio rated it it was amazing Shelves: poetry. A staggeringly beautiful, lyrical, soulful, and yet contemporary collection of poetry by one of the greatest poets alive. Both an excellent introduction to Ko Un's poetry, as well as an essential addition to any fan's library. With superb translations by Brother Anthony of Taize, this is a book that I refer to time and time again. Strongly recommended.

Mar 23, Neil Fulwood rated it really liked it. What do you do? Throw the book out? Destroy it? Immediately desist reading and shove it back on the shelf to gather dust? What I did, albeit under a cloud and with a lack of enthusiasm, was to finish the thing more or less in one sitting. It seemed equally pointless leaving it half-read.
So I waded through some sublime and thoughtful writing and whenever I wondered how come such beauty could be created by a sleazeball, I told myself to stop being so fucking naive. That I know full well that great art is often created by flawed, even sociopathic, individuals. That this is why we labour to separate the artist from the art.
